The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office is seeking a motivated, compassionate, and service-oriented Detention Deputy (Temp) to serve in the Community Wellness Unit. This specialized assignment focuses on overdose response, mental health crisis intervention, and community-based outreach, working collaboratively with medical professionals, behavioral health providers, and community partners to improve public safety and quality of life.
Detention Deputy (Temp) assigned to this unit will play a critical role in responding to individuals experiencing substance use crises or mental health emergencies, emphasizing care, connection to services, and long-term solutions alongside traditional law enforcement responsibilities.
Work Schedule: Schedule may vary based on the needs of the unit for inmate escorts for treatment.

SALARY HIRING RANGE: $21.23 - $24.63

Duties and Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
Escort inmates who are participating in treatment programming within the jail to and from the location of the group/program.
Supervise inmates while engaged in treatment group/program to ensure safety.
Collaborate with counterpart roles in other law enforcement agencies to coordinate follow up efforts as appropriate.
Perform all other duties consistent with the role of Charleston County Sheriff’s Detention Deputy.
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be a certified Class 2 detention with at least 2 years’ certified (Class 2) experience.
A U.S. Citizen A South Carolina licensed driver or the ability to obtain a South Carolina driver’s license
Have no criminal convictions
Honorably discharged from military (if applicable)
Preferred Qualifications:
Background or training in behavioral health, social services, or public health
Demonstrated interest in community wellness, prevention, and outreach-based policing
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Understanding of substance use disorders and mental health challenges
Strong de-escalation and conflict resolution skills
Compassionate, patient-centered approach to public service
Ability to build trust with community members and partner agencies
Proficiency in report writing and data collection systems
