Job Description:

Maintenance Worker I (Temporary) (20765851)

Description

The City of Menlo Park is seeking dedicated team members to join our Public Works Maintenance Division in temporary roles.

Help us care for the community's vibrant parks, thriving urban canopy, and essential public infrastructure. Tailored to each candidate's experience, assignments span key operational areas including Trees, Streets, Facilities, Parks, and Water where team members will gain hands-on experience operating a diverse range of machinery, from heavy utility vehicles like dump trucks, backhoes, forklifts, and aerial lifts to specialized field equipment such as brush chippers, stump grinders, concrete saws, hedge trimmers, and power tools. Ideal candidates will thrive in an outdoor and/or indoor setting, bring a collaborative and communicative spirit to foster effective working relationships across teams, and demonstrate a strong commitment to following safety protocols and instructions while keeping Menlo Park beautiful for residents and visitors alike.

Maintenance Worker I

This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure, systems, grounds, parks, facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.
