The City of Menlo Park is seeking dedicated team members to join our Public Works Maintenance Division in temporary roles.

Maintenance Worker I

This is the entry-level class in the Maintenance Worker series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure, systems, grounds, parks, facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

Ideal Candidate

Positions assigned to the entry (I) level of the series may perform some tasks in a learning capacity of the following assignments:

• Facilities -Carries out entry-level upkeep, routine repairs, and preventative care to ensure buildings, grounds, and equipment remain safe and functional. Operating under direct supervision, key duties include basic plumbing, minor electrical work, drywall patching, painting, HVAC filter replacements, and grounds maintenance. They also conduct routine property inspections, respond to daily service requests, and track tool inventory and maintenance logs.
• Parks -Maintains and repairs City grounds, parks, sports fields, and public facilities to ensure safe community access. Key duties include routine turf care, trash removal, and leaf clearing, along with skilled work like ball diamond renovations, pump maintenance, and pest treatment. Additionally, this role oversees flower bed landscaping, tree and shrub pruning, and the operation, repair, and installation of manual and automatic irrigation systems.
• Streets - This role is responsible for maintaining and repairing City streets, roadways, and storm drainage systems to ensure safe public access. Key duties include repairing asphalt and concrete, clearing obstacles, digging trenches, and managing storm drain cleanliness. Additionally, the position involves fabricating, installing, and maintaining traffic signs in compliance with code standards, as well as executing street and parking lot striping and legend painting.
• Trees - This role oversees the health, safety, and aesthetic design of municipal trees through planting, pruning, stump grinding, and safe tree removal. Responsibilities include diagnosing pests or diseases to apply targeted treatment plans and operating specialized equipment such as chain saws, chippers, stump grinders, and aerial lifts to perform daily maintenance.
• Water - Performs skilled operational and technical work to ensure safe municipal drinking water. Their daily responsibilities include maintaining and repairing water mains, pumps, valves, and hydrants and inspecting pump stations and storage reservoirs. They may handle line taps, flush distribution systems, respond to utility emergencies and customer water quality concerns, and operate heavy equipment, all while staying compliant with strict state environmental and public health regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education and Experience

• Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
• One (1) year of experience in performing maintenance work in assigned area.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license by time of appointment.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B license within six (6) months of employment with appropriate endorsements if assigned to Streets or Trees.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an Electrical Hazards Awareness Program (EHAP) certificate within twelve (12) months of employment if assigned to Trees.

Benefits

These are non-benefited temporary positions. A temporary employee may not work more than 1000 hours per year and will receive sick leave in accordance with State Law.
