Description
The Novato Fire Reserve program will consist of four (4) levels. Assignments are dependent upon qualifications. New Reserves may enter the program at Levels 1-3 dependent on qualifications. Each level builds upon the requirements of the preceding levels. Level 4 requires completion of the Reserve Firefighter task book, and background investigation including polygraph, psychological and medical evaluation.
Requirements by Level:
- Level 1: Age 18 at time of hire, driver license, High School diploma or GED certificate, AND enrollment in EMS and/or Fire related course; OR currently employed by NFD.
- Level 2: Meets all Level 1 requirements AND has Firefighter 1 academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate; OR an active paramedic license.
- Level 3: Meets Level 1 and has Firefighter 1 academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate, AND has an active paramedic license.
- Level 4: Meets Level and has Firefighter 1 Academy or California State Firefighter 1 certificate, AND active paramedic license, AND has completed Reserve Firefighter Task Book.
General Requirements:
- Reserves will be required to attend a three (3) hour paid training night, twice per month.
- Level 3 and 4 Reserves will act as Senior Reserve mentors to Level 1 and 2 Reserves.
- Once eligible, Reserves will be expected to attend a minimum of one (1), 12 hour paid ride a long per month on the assigned shift.
- In recognition of the benefits of teaching/evaluating paramedic skills of new members, Reserves may be eligible and given priority for Paramedic internships within the district. Internships will be approved on a case-by-case basis.
Benefits
California State paid sick leave of one (1) hour for every 30 hours worked.
