Job DetailsUnder general direction, provides supervision, training, and work coordination for assigned staff while conducting sanitary inspections and investigations in the enforcement of federal, state, county, and local environmental health, safety, and hazardous materials laws, rules, regulations, and standards; also assists with program development and improvement, and performs related duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR I Licensing and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver’s License.
Possession of a valid Environmental Health registration issued by the State Department of Public Health.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or a closely related field.
AND
Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialistperforming a variety of environmental investigations and inspections comparable to Environmental Health Specialist Senior with the County of Lake.
Additional directly related experience and/or education may be substituted.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SPECIALIST SUPERVISOR II Licensing and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver’s License.
Possession of a valid Environmental Health registration issued by the State Department of Public Health.
Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in biology, chemistry, physics, environmental science, or a closely related field.
AND
Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Environmental Health Specialistperforming a variety of environmental investigations and inspections comparable to Environmental Health Specialist Senior with the County of Lake and at least one (1) year of experience in management or supervisory capacity.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the entry supervisory and fully experienced, advanced working level class in the Environmental Health Specialist series. Incumbents provide supervision, training, and work coordination for Environmental Health Specialists, Environmental Health Technicians, and other staff as assigned. In addition, incumbents conduct investigations in a broad range of Environmental Health areas on an independent basis.
The Environmental Health Specialist Supervisor is distinguished from the Environmental Health Specialist, Senior by the assignment of supervisory responsibilities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives general direction from the Environmental Health Director or Health Services Director. Exercises direct and general supervision over professional, technical, and/or administrative staff.

- Conducts sanitation surveys and confers with local officials on sanitation problems.
- Works with solid waste issues and problems, including illegal garbage dumping.
- Takes water, soil, and waste samples, interpreting data.
- Interprets environmental health laws and regulations for the public and may respond to public inquiries regarding Environmental Health issues and permit procedures.
- Reviews plans for new subdivisions and may conduct on-site inspections to ensure suitable water and sewage facilities.

- Initiates non-compliance legal actions, filing criminal complaints in court, or scheduling an administrative hearing, as appropriate.

RETIREMENT - County employees are members of the California Public Employee Retirement system (CalPERS).CalPERS provides a defined benefit pension at retirement for County employees.The pension formulas and employee contribution amounts may vary by bargaining unit, date of hire, prior qualifying service, and classification. HEALTH AND INSURANCE BENEFITS - Medical, dental, hospital, vision, life and disability coverage is available to employees and their dependents. The County contributes $1,500 of the monthly premiums for the insurance plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL may be adjusted for current city or county government employees.
VACATION - 80 hours per year during the first five years of service, 120 hours per year after five years, and additional accruals based on years of service beyond fifteen years. Pro-rated for part-time employees.
SICK LEAVE - Accrues at a rate of 96 hours per year. Pro-rated for part-time employees.
HOLIDAYS- An average of twelve paid 8-hour holidays per year. Pro-rated for part-time employees.
SALARY - Lake County has an adopted salary schedule. The salary range for most classifications is in five increments with a provision for longevity increases. Appointments are normally made at the first step of the salary range.
SOCIAL SECURITY - County employees participate in Social Security.
CALIFORNIA STATE DISABILITY INSURANCE - SDI is available to some County employees.
DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLANS and CREDIT UNION MEMBERSHIPS are available to County employees.
