Job Description:Graduate Engineer APurpose:Under direct supervision of a Professional Engineer, use engineering knowledge to perform routine engineering projects/assignments requiring limited judgment within the defined methods, procedures, and practices for the application of standards and criteria necessary to fulfill the experience requirement for pursuant of a licensure as a professional engineer.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Assist in preparation and maintenance of design drawings, diagrams, charts, databases plan and permits under the supervision of a professional engineer. Development of proposals for impacts and performing preliminary and final designs and/or prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
- Assists in the preparation of standards, equipment specifications, design procedures, test procedures as it relates to the standardization and engineering policies and practices. Reviews and provides assistance in the evaluation and recommendation for job safety procedures.
- Coordinates and provides a variety of technical information under the guidance of a professional engineer to customers by contacts with personnel to include inter and intra departmental administrative, engineering and construction personnel, other government agencies, contractors, consultants and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions and respond to complaints.
- Use computerized software programs, ink or pencil drafting to prepare drawings and maps to provide technical advice and guidance to assigned work or project. Develop, analyze and generate technical reports, correspondence and official documents.
- Assist in the preparation of preliminary, periodic and final estimates of quantities, materials, equipment, labor and facilities for the preparation of budgets, programs, schedules, partial and final contract payments and other purposes for various projects.
- Conduct field inspections of work done by contractors to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Draft and recommend contract change orders and payments for approval.
- Perform statistical analysis to ensure specifications are within established guidelines.

- Knowledge of mathematical techniques such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry
- Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of assigned discipline

- Knowledge of various computer software programs applicable to position
- Knowledge of preparation of cost estimates Skill in oral and written technical and/or general communication
- Ability to perform engineering calculations and analyze engineering problems
- Ability to Read and comprehend simple specifications, plans, and shop drawings.
- Ability to Interpret and make decisions in conformance within established policies and practices.

Minimum Qualifications:- Graduation with a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Engineering or in a field related to the job.
Licenses and Certifications Required:None.
Preferred Qualifications:- Knowledge of fundamental traffic engineering principles to respond to safety concerns utilizing established engineering guidelines.
- Ability to conduct stop and speed studies, review license agreements, right-of-way vacation requests, and public utility easements.
- Ability to assist TPW’s Area Engineers and Engineering Technicians/Associates, City of Austin Departments and represent City of Austin at public meetings with neighborhood groups and community stakeholders.
- Knowledge of the City of Austin’s Transportation Criteria Manual, Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (TMUTCD), and AASHTO Green Book.
Notes to Candidate:City of Austin Transportation & Public Works (TPW) is seeking an innovative person to work in one of our engineering operations groups within the Transportation Engineering Division. This is an exciting opportunity to implement national best-practice in engineering transportation engineering to improve safety and mobility for all users.
The ideal candidate is proficient in transportation engineering operation and safety, has an in-depth understanding of local and national engineering best practices, is comfortable with flexibility, can work in a bustling work environment, and can effectively communicate with the public and elected officials. This position requires simultaneously managing multiple projects and the ability to shift from one project to another without sacrificing quality.
It will benefit this person to have this knowledge, but at a minimum the candidate should have a strong desire to learn and absorb this information. This position will perform highly complex engineering functions that include implementing traffic control devices, designing transportation system improvements, and responding to customer service requests in the Transportation Engineering Division on behalf of TPW.
This position will occasionally require work related commitments in the evenings and on weekends to attend public/neighborhood meetings or to make engineering related observations.
This position will lead the following duties:
Engineering Operations: develop responses to customer service requests (311 submittals); lead engineering studies; provide technical assistance to other TPW divisions and City of Austin departments. Engineering Programs: design and review projects for bond initiatives (Intersection Safety, Corridor Mobility, Safe Routes to School, Bikeways, Urban Trails, Sidewalks, etc.) and other programs (Speed Management, Transit Enhancement, Pedestrian Crossings, etc.) Development Review: review site plans, sight distance diagrams, license agreements, public easement releases, and ROW vacations. Public Interface: participate in neighborhood and public meetings; respond to these stakeholders and community members in written and verbal communication.
Travel:If you are selected for this position, and meet the Driver Safety Standards in the City of Austin Driver Safety Program, you may drive when necessary to multiple locations as part of your regular job duties. Otherwise, you are responsible for getting to and from these locations.
Essential Employee:This position is considered an “Essential” role and is essential to the operations of the City based on the preparation, response, and recovery phase of extraordinary situations or emergency conditions. As an employee that has been designated as “Essential” the expectation will be to work at a designated work site during declared extraordinary situations or emergency conditions to serve the community. Essential Employees during emergencies play a role in ensuring the public health, safety, and welfare of our community and ensuring City operations continue.
Pay Rate: $71,630.00 - $90,980.00
